Columbia summers are brutally hot. Bring plenty of water and consider electrolyte drinks. Pack sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
Metered street parking is available around the State House, and in the downtown area nearby. Bring change.
Many businesses are nearby; this is the center of the city. Numerous restaurants and cafes are located near the State House.
A Publix supermarket is conveniently located at 501 Gervais Street (29201), a 15-minute walk from the State House. This is on the same street as the State House, requiring no turns. Their phone number is 803-255-4351 and they are open until 10 p.m. Publix has an active DEI policy as of March 12, 2025.
If you have time, the University of South Carolina's Horseshoe is a historic campus landmark.
Bicycle parking and locking racks are available on and near campus.
Don't make our jail your jail: In January 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) released findings from its investigation into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. The DOJ concluded that the facility fails to protect incarcerated individuals from an unreasonable risk of violence and harm, including sexual assaults, which they described as "pervasive, systematic, and commonplace." The investigation revealed severe deficiencies in staffing, supervision, and security measures, contributing to a climate of violence and unsafe conditions.
